NewsBLITZ: METAL & HARDCORE PHOTOGRAPHY BOOK

Massaschusetts-based music photographer Jeremy Saffer has compiled 156 of his impressive photographs of metal and hardcore artists into one 120-page tome, Bring The Noise.

The hardcover book features a foreword written by Eighteen Visions bassist MickDeth and color photos of bands such as Lacuna Coil, Bleeding Through, All That Remains, Dimmu Borgir, Bring Me The Horizon, Norma Jean, Earth Crisis and Behemoth. Some of these shots have never-been-seen before.

"I'm really excited," says Saffer. "For me, it holds many amazing memories of photo sessions I've done throughout my career. Everything from shooting Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil in a bathtub full of black water and doing the first U.S. photo shoot Carcass has done in over 10 years, to covering the first shoot Earth Crisis did since their break up in 2002, and the many other amazing shoots I was lucky enough to do in my first few years as a photographer. This book sums up my career thus far, so I'm really pumped on having a bunch of diverse work from different genres of heavy music all collected in one book. This is a chance for people to really see what I've done thus far, from all the angles of my career."

Many musicians have praised Saffer's pictures:

"His photos speak to me; I admire his work, and all he captures with his lens," says Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta.

"The word 'talented' absolutely belongs to Mr. Saffer," describes Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia.

"A lot of us take pictures, but Jeremy takes photographs," states David Ellefson, formerly of Megadeth. "Even though his subjects are some of the biggest icons of rock who are worthy of a thousand words to tell their story, Jeremy says it all in one snap of a shutter."

Bring The Noise officially comes out April 21, but Saffer is already taking pre-orders—complete with a $10 discount and packaged with a limited-edition Bring The Noise/Jeremy Saffer guitar pick collection. Click here to place your oder now.

MARCH NEW ALBUM RECOMMENDATIONS!

Here are MusikBLITZ’s top picks from all of the new releases that have come out in the month of March:

The Answer's Everyday Demons (The End Records): Irish rockers The Answer got a big career boost last fall when they opened up for AC/DC's North American tour. Now the quartet’s debut U.S. album—which debuted at No. 25 in the U.K. and No. 8 on Japan's international chart—is in stores. "The future of classic rock is in good hands," says Classic Rock magazine about The Answer.

Burn Halo’s Burn Halo (Rawkhead Records/Warner Music): Former Eighteen Visions singer James Hart's new band bleeds sex, drugs and pure rock 'n' roll. The album’s raunchy first single, "Dirty Little Girl," and the track "Anejo" both feature a guest appearance by Avenged Sevenfold's Synyster Gates. The Alternative Press even loves this band saying: "The songs are way more Mötley Crüe than Nickelback... The first single is dynamic and attractive, chock full of gritty guitar riffs and throbbing drums—and it doesn’t leave you feeling dirty for listening to it.” In April, Burn Halo will hit the road as part of the Sno-Core Tour along with Static-X and Saliva.

Dope’s No Regrets (E1 Music): According to frontman Edsel Dope, the Chicago-based band’s fifth CD is "a record for the fans [that] also has enough hooks, energy and good times to engage a new group of disciples with each and every listen." Lead single "Addiction" has guitar God Zakk Wylde shredding on it. Currently, Dope is on tour with Wylde's Black Label Society and Sevendust.

Filter’s The Very Best Things—1995-2008 (Rhino Records): This 14-track compilation features the band's greatest hits, rare radio edits and soundtrack songs such as "Hey Man, Nice Shot," "Take A Picture," "(Can't You) Trip Like I Do" and "Welcome To The Fold."

Papa Roach's Metamorphosis (DGC/Interscope Records): "This record has a huge rock edge with tinges of punk and metal," says frontman Jacoby Shaddix about the band's fifth album. "It has that groove and aggression we''e always had, but there's also a new flare." Adds bassist Tobin Esperance: "The sound of the new record is electric. It's balls-to-the-wall, organic rock 'n' roll with raw, in-your-face emotion. On the flip side, there's melody, vulnerability and honesty." Singles "Hollywood Whore" and "Lifeline" have already garnered major attention.

Queensrÿche's American Soldier (Atco/Rhino Records): Concept album kings Queensrÿche examine the consequences of war from the perspective of soldiers on their latest progressive metal opus. Each song was inspired by an iterview singer Geoff Tate conducted with a veteran. "My father was a career military man, but until very recently he never spoke about what he went through," explains Tate. "I think that reticence is true of a lot of veterans, which means most people never truly understand what it means to be a soldier at war. Hearing what he and some of our fans have endured made me want to share their stories with the world. This is an album about the soldiers, for the soldiers, as told by the soldiers themselves." Fans can hear snippets of songs by calling the Queensrÿche hotline at 206-260-1215.

Static-X's Cult Of Static (Reprise Records): The industrial metal band returns with their sixth album. "Over the years my voice has been destroyed from excessive touring—and I love it," exclaims frontman Wayne Static. "The vocals on the new record are raw and brutal." Highlights include first single "Stingwray" (inspired by the car Wayne's wife, former porn star Tera Wray, drives) and album opener "Lunatic" (originally found on the Punisher: War Zone movie soundtrack, the song has now been rerecorded and features a guitar solo from Megadeth's Dave Mustaine). If you pick up Cult Of Static at Best Buy, you get two bonus tunes and a membership card that allows one to access a special third track and also have the chance to win concert tickets and meet-n-greet passes.

Sum 41's All The Good Shit: The Best Of Sum 41—2000-2008 (Island Records): Fourteen tracks have been culled from the band's five releases for this collection, including tracks like "Fat Lip," "In Too Deep," "Pain For Pleasure" and a live version of "Hell Song." (Two additional tracks can be found on albums purchased at Best Buy.) Plus, All The Good Shit comes with a bonus DVD showcasing 13 of Sum 41's music videos.

Various Artists' Now That's What I Call Power Ballads (UMVD): The latest release in the popular franchise has 18 of the most beloved ballads from the '80s. Favorites from the likes of Poison, Journey, Heart, Cheap Trick, Slaughter, Extreme, Tesla and Warrant are all on this compilation.

Various Artists' Punk Goes Pop 2 (Fearless Records): The eighth album in the "Punk Goes..." compilation series, which debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard Top 200, features creative punk-rock takes on some of today's hit pop tunes. Bands like Alesana, Silverstein, Escape The Fate, Bayside and Four Year Strong revitalize songs by Justin Timberlake, Pussycat Dolls, Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Katy Perry and more. Check out the music video for A Static Lullaby's cover of Britney Spears’' "Toxic" here.

NewsBLITZ: BRET MICHAELS GETS HIS OWN BEHIND THE MUSIC!

Last week, VH1 announced that it's bringing back it's popular documentary series Behind The Music. Lil Wayne and Scott Weiland were officially announced as just two of the subjects that the show will focus on.

However, MusikBLITZ has learned that one of the other subjects is none other than Mr. Rock Of Love Bus, Bret Michaels. VH1's film crew was on hand March 21 to capture the singer's live show at The Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, N.J. And, Bret's show even started a bit later than planned due to interviews he was doing for the program.

New episodes of Behind The Music will begin airing in July.

NewsBLITZ: THIS WEEK IN MÖTLEY CRÜE

Mötley Crüe continues to make headlines, with the following new items developing over the last week:

1. On March 16, the full lineup for Crüe Fest 2: The White Trash Circus was finally announced during a press conference at Fuse's New York City. Godsmack, Theory Of A Deadman, Drowning Pool and Charm City Devils will all be hitting the road with the Crüe this summer, starting
July 19 in Camden, N.J. and ending Sept. 5 in Darien Lake, N.Y. "This is what we imagined when we came up with the idea of Crüe Fest last summer—putting together the most kick ass bands on one bill for a day of rock," says Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx. "All of the bands on this tour compliment the others—musically, theatrically and passionately." The Mötley men arrived at the press conference in an old-fashioned ambulance, accompanied by two scantily clad "nurses." Why the throwback to the Dr. Feelgood days? The band is using Crüe Fest 2 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their first No. 1 record by playing the entire album from beginning to end each night of the tour. Visit the official Crüe Fest 2 website for additional information and the latest tour dates.

Godsmack's Sully Erna, Drowning Pool's Ryan McCombs, Nurse #1, Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, MicK Mars, Nurse #2, Theory of a Deadman's Tyler Connolly and Charm City Devils' John Allen

2. The Crüe is offering a free MP3 download of their new single, “White Trash Circus.” Get the song here.

3. A DVD documenting the inaugural Crüe Fest hits stores March 24. Footage from the 2008 jaunt featuring Mötley Crüe, Buckcherry, Papa Roach, Trapt and Sixx A.M. make up the 2-disc set.

4. And, lastly, Carrie Underwood has recorded a version of the Crüe ballad "Home Sweet Home." The song will air each week as the farewell theme for the voted-off contestants leaving American Idol. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from the digital single will benefit The Humane Society of the United States. "I’ve always loved this song and, besides being very fitting for Idol, to me, the title is also very fitting with animal rescue and finding animals their own homes," says Underwood. Carrie has shown her love for Mötley Crüe in the past by performing "Kickstart My Heart" live onstage in Nashville with Vince Neil during one of his solo shows in 2008.

Doctor Feelgood?

I thought the Crue could have done a much better job of finding "sexy nurses."

Either way, please for the love of god someone tip off Motley Crue that Vince Neil needs to be replaced. Over a week ago in New Jersey he complained of being sick. CherylBLITZ will tell you about last night's show in NYC later...

BLITZ EXCLUSIVE: Motley Crue

With VINCE NIEL all plastic surgery'd out, NIKKI SIXX sober and TOMMY LEE thinking he's still 25, Motley Crue wants to attempt going back to their bad boy, rockstar ways. In an attempt to cause ruckus like its 1987 again, the Motley Crue (former) bad boys are planning a secret "Dr Feelgood"-esque fiasco for Monday afternoon. For their unnecessary press conference (announcing lineup for CrueFest 2 summer festival), the aging rockers will arrive in NYC riding a vintage ambulance filled with "half naked chicks dressed as sexy nurses." (A few other unmentionable words were used).

NewsBLITZ: ANVIL IS BACK!

There's been much talk about the documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil, and music fans will finally learn the band's full story thanks to VH1 as the company has acquired the rights to the critically-acclaimed film, handling its television premiere (set to air sometime this summer) and subsequent DVD release and also distribute it theatrically (starting April 10 in New York and Los Angeles before a national roll-out).

The movie is the true-life story of Steve "Lips" Kudlow and Robb Reiner and their band, Anvil. The "demigods of Canadian metal" released one of the heaviest metal albums in history back in 1982—Metal on Metal. The record was a major influence on many future metal icons like Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax. However, Anvil took the path straight to obscurity following the initial hoopla. The film follows the group's last-ditch quest for fame and fortune. Reps say the flick is "a timeless tale of survival and the unadulterated passion it takes to follow your dream year after year." Musicians such as Slash, Lars Ulrich, Scott Ian and Tom Araya make appearances in the flick.

"This film is so much more than a documentary about the roots of metal. It's a story about the power of perseverance and the friendship and the passion that drives them," says VH1 president Tom Calderone. "Anvil! The Story of Anvil has a huge heart and will resonate with all of our viewers. This is the type of project that drew me into the VH1 fold and makes me especially proud to work here." Meanwhile, documentarian Michael Moore called the film "the best documentary I've seen in years" and the London Times says it's "possibly the greatest film yet made about rock 'n' roll."

And, in order to pick up where they left off 25 years ago, the band recently signed with a new manager and new agents in both the U.S. and the U.K. and has VH1 Classic serving as the exclusive presenter for their new tour.

VH1 Classic Presents: The Anvil Experience will hit seven cities this April and, at each tour stop,
Anvil! The Story of Anvil will be shown and will be immediately followed by a short performance by the band.

The Anvil Experience Tour Dates:
April 6: Blender Theater—New York, NY
April 12: Slim's—San Francisco, CA
April 14: El Corazon—Seattle, WA
April 16: The Palladium—Worcester, MA
April 17: Trocadero—Philadelphia, PA
April 21: Crofoot Ballroom—Pontiac, MI
April 22: Metro—Chicago, IL

If anyone goes to any of these fests, MusikBLITZ would love to hear all about them!

NewsBLITZ: NEW CRUE VIDEO + CRUE FEST 2 UPDATE!

Yes, we’ve been a little Mötley Crüe obsessed here at MusikBLITZ lately. In fact, JennBLITZ saw the band this past Friday night at The Borgota in Atlantic City; CherylBLITZ will be seeing the band on March 16 at NYC’s Madison Square Garden. Yet we are still getting excited about this summer’s Crüe Fest 2: The White Trash Circus.

Anyway…we’re still one week away from the full reveal of Crüe Fest 2’s official lineup. However, the Crüe has announced that they will be playing their 1989 album Dr. Feelgood in its entirety during every single tour stop in honor of the best-selling record’s 20 year anniversary. Dr. Feelgood was Mötley’s first No. 1 album on the Billboard charts and it went on to sell more than seven million copies worldwide, producing five Billboard Hot 100 hits. Later this spring, Eleven Seven Music/Mötley Records will re-release the beloved album.
"On this summer’s Crüe Fest we really want to give the fans something they’ve never seen before,” says bassist Nikki Sixx. “And since its the 20th anniversary of the release of Dr. Feelgood, we figured what better way to celebrate than to play it live top to bottom every night.” So get ready to hear songs like “Slice Of Your Pie,” “Rattlesnake Shake” and “She Goes Down” in addition to Crüe standards like “Kickstart My Heart” and “Same Ol’ Situation.”

What else? Oh, the Crüe has released a brand new video for the song “White Trash Circus” from their latest CD, 2008’s Saints Of Los Angeles.

See MusikBLITZ’s initial Crüe Fest 2 posting here or visit the tour’s official website here.

NewsBLITZ: BON JOVI BOOK COMING NEXT FALL!

To celebrate Bon Jovi’s 25th anniversary, HarperCollins will release the first-ever official book on the band, Bon Jovi: When We Were Beautiful.

The book, which comes out next fall, will contain never-before-seen photos and exclusive text from the group (Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, David Bryan and Tico Torres). Says HarperCollins: "From intimate moments to basking in the limelight, the book offers fans an honest, unposed and unscripted portrait of this legendary band at work and at home."

"We are honored to be collaborating with one of the most successful bands in rock history," explains Marta Schooler, Publisher of Collins Design. "Bon Jovi's continuing success has been no less than remarkable and we are thrilled to be publishing the must-have book for all their fans."

Beatin' mother fuckers like Chris beat Rihanna

I've been trying not to get on a soap box about Rihanna and Chris brown...I've actually been envying their camps' efforts to keep things under wraps - not just with the February 8th incident - but with both artists' personal info during their careers. It seems like Rihanna's team is better under control with her attorney now finally releasing statements regarding her possibly testifying, etc. In my opinion, Brown's publicist / managers / hanger on-ers need to approach this more seriously and not tip off paparazzi when he's jetskiing in Miami and partying until 3am. But hey, what do I know about that stuff?

BOOK REVIEW: "BACKSTAGE PASS" BY GABY TRIANA

I recently stumbled across a really cute Young Adult/Teen novel about the daughter of a rockstar, Gaby Triana's Backstage Pass. The easy-to-read book, which originally came out in 2004 via HarperCollins, is now available as both a hardcover and a paperback.

The book tells the tale of 16-year-old Desert McGraw—the daughter of Flesh, lead singer of famous rock band Crossfire, and the band's manager, Matti. Desert has spent her entire life on the road, sleeping on buses and in hotels as she travels the world with her dad's band. Her pop's band members and road crew are like family members; she doesn't have any close friends since she is never in one place. When her father decides to set up shop in Miami for a while to record a new Crossfire album, Desert thinks this is the perfect time for her to lead a "normal" life with real friends, in a real school. Can Desert deal with normalcy? Or will she learn that home is where the heart is?

This book deals with the problems faced by many children of musicians and tells the stories in a lighthearted and fun manner. But the book, created for teens, doesn't eschew the more mature problems like philandering, groupies and backstabbing.

The fictional Desert's view of life probably mimics the current views of real life celebrity children like Madonna's 12-year-old daughter Lourdes or what Kelly Osbourne (Ozzy's daughter) thought about while growing up.

Backstage Pass is a good book for music lovers to read—whether you're young or just young at heart.
